The Project started in September 2009 with the initial expression fo interest and visions concepts.

The next obstacle was Communication challenges between our vision and their technology which is most friendly in Thai. Losts of phone calls and supporting emails have moved us to the next stage.

The current obstacle is the training the staff. In December 2009 AusWaThai decided to fund the cost of bringing our Thai employee to Perth WA for training on the process and assist in the development of a manual that can be used for new staff as they are introduced to the system.

Unfortunately the Australian Immigration office in Bangkok has blocked the visa siting they are not satsified there is a need for the employee to visit in regard to this project. Ironcially we are trying to Promote Australian Business in Thailand and our Australian Immigration office has stalled the process. The Thailand employee is also requried to help promote other Australian icons but is fell on deaf ears.. we will continue the struggle

AustCham Thailand - Connecting Australia with Thailand

During the October visit Bangkok I decided to update contact with AustCham Thailand.

A brief email was dispensed, it was not long before an email came back to say hello from a fellow Sandgroper.  To my surprise the new Executive Director, Brett Gannaway is product of W.A. The connection triggered a volley of emails and a phone call.  Brett’s enthusiastic invitation was all I needed and a meeting was set.

The enthusiasm increased when Brett mentioned their office is on the BTS line. The BTS (skytrain) is an incredibly efficient "Train in the sky" (you'd say mono rail) in the heart of Bangkok. The BTS almost takes you to the door of their offices.

When you disembark at station Surasak make sure you check the correct exist (it’s a long walk back up and over). Look  over the side and spot the famous is “Blue Elephant” Restaurant, it’s feature is a Century old building and immediately behind is AustCham office in the Thai CC Tower.

The website picture of the Blue Elephant is a slight mystery; it's surrounded by blue sky whereas in reality it's shadowed by the 20+ storey building (Thai CC Tower).

So, for about about 30 baht and 20 minutes to journey to BTS station Surasak (form BTS Asoke) then a very brief walk past the “Blue Elephant”, a fast elevator ride to the 20th floor to AustCham Thailand office.

On entry you will see a patriotic Green and Gold colour scheme which is complimented by a ever so polite Thai smile and welcome at reception.

Adjacent to reception is the Boardroom, apart from it’s comfortable fit out is a hi-tech coffee machine. I always notice these machines because I have issues with the 2 in our offices in W.A., anyway don’t say no to a cupa because the aroma will haunt you.

Brett arrived, wearing an 8ft tall and 3 foot wide chassis, I thought he was the captain of the all blacks but he assured me he is a W.A. product.

We worked the afternoon meeting running through the usual protocol, but ever so different because of the W.A. connection. It does remind me of the value of an association, be it Geographical or a membership/club.

A brief recital
The Australian-Thai Chamber of Commerce (AustCham Thailand) was the first Australian Chamber to be formed in the ASEAN region. It was established in 1977 with the charter to promote business relations between Australia and Thailand.

The Chamber acts as a contact and information point for Australian businesses in Thailand, Australian businesses wishing to trade with or invest in Thailand and similarly for Thai enterprises interested in doing business with or in Australia.

AustCham Thailand aims to provide quality and constructive input into the formulation of policies impacting on business (both by the Thai and Australian Governments), and their administration, and to contribute to the development of relations between the two countries. AustCham Thailand is a member of the Board of Trade of Thailand and its President is automatically a Director of the Board of Trade.

With over 30 years and over 400 member experiences to draw upon, AustCham Thailand has all of the resources and contacts any company needs to set up and do business in Thailand.

My observation

Company mission statement means a lot if it's lived by it’s people, the workers that represent the company.

I only met a few staff on arrival, however I met a few more later in day as they queued to bid farewell to Brett. Apart from the obviously politeness of the thai Culture the staff showed a culture and enthusiasm which flowed from the 1st contact with Brett. If this is culture of AustCham confirms what I hear about the Members monthly sundowners – "Charm" and the reason the Sundowner is a sellout.

AustCham Thailand offers significant Network opportunities into Thailand, it's a must do strategy for any Aussie genuine about entering the Thailand Business arena.

Dispel the myth:
1. Membership cost is not the rumoured 12,000 dollars it’s around 12,000 baht.
2. They DO have a close working relationship with the Aust Embassy and the Thai Government.

Now a word about Brett; a Dashing, Athletic, Brilliant, Charming, all round good guy (obvious W.A. features) he decided to go see the world when he was 21. When he was in transit in Thailand he kinda stayed or at least did not stay away for too long.

Over the past 15 years he worked for Thai and Chinese companies, self taught the language, got married (Thai) and started a family. He career path has included a variety of occupations facilitating contact with local and International custom predominately in the promotion and marketing Industry leading to his current position as Executive Director with AustCham Thailand.

I was so impressed by Brett’s energy and testament to the capacity of AustCham Thailand I have applied for membership and I recommend you do the same.

The Grandest of Airports Su-wanarporm (sorry I can't spell it, and in Thailand it does not matter, they love your attitude toward life, not grammar...) TIP: ... I'd rather be remembered for being happy than my accuracy of a spelling exam? exame? whatever....

I found it easier to learn Thai language after reading more about Thai language culture, in particular “Heart Culture”. Now we all think English language is easy and Thai is complicated because it's tonal (5 different Tones) … say the word “Glai” with a different tone and it can mean “close” or “far away” ..this can be frustrating when seeking directions but stay cool and remind yourself of their version of “no worries” (Mai ben rai), more on Thai Language


I always enjoy setting off into in my arrival airport, it's the beginning of a new adventure and in Thailand the adventure it's always different.

I never get tired of the flashback of the “Jetsons”, when I see that Moving footpath and as our flock of "fly ins" huddle for position I think out loud “maaaa maaaaa” ... I think you get the joke. By The way “maaa” in Thai means “come” or “dog” or “Horse” (depends on the tone). Haa haa haa …. (laugh laugh but "haa haa haa" also means 5 5 5 in Thai).

one of the aches of travelling alone or when in charge of a flock is you shoulder the fear factor.. what if this.... what if that... oh god when does their holiday finish so I can relax.. a little sad but true for some... and you know who you are...


There are lots of things to contemplate.. you can start the worry widget or start enjoying yourself and let it fall into place - Up to you...

as a our flock muster toward immigration I ponder "I have never meet a country more welcoming" (except Singapore) .. it just doesn't get any better, the Customs people almost drag you through and gesturing to stop to query you have brought something bad to their Country is outrageous.. why would you do that to Thailand "It's the Land of smiles".... I mean .. look this is War in Thailand

Once you have stepped into the Public area the Transport Touters (private taxi) people could not be friendlier... we tend to shy away from them fearing a scam, well it is a scam, they want you to buy their product at an inflated price, but unlike other countries they are so polite. Say hello and show the slightest interest in them as a person and they drop everything to help you for free, by this I mean directions where to change money and where to get a cheaper taxi metre..... of course if you are travelling in a group it's probably cheaper to use them, they can summon a mini bus in minutes and you will not then have to wait in the public taxi queue, which can be quite daunting.


Obviously there are buses (and soon a monorail) but for about 200-300baht you can get a aircon taxi from the airport to Bangkok..

The Taxi .. You need to decide which route... take it easy down on the ground and maybe some traffic issues (they can be horrible) or go the skyway or tollway (up there) and begin the adventure - thrill ride factor...

TRY TO AVOID SITTING IN THE FRONT SEAT OR LOOKING FORWARD... your there to relax and s^%#$ your daks

Jump on the sky train and in minutes you can be at one end of town to the other, jump in a Taxi, a tuk tuk (if you dare) or the ultimate a motor bike taxi - now that's a real thrill. MAJOR THRILL.

An Australian owned Company in Thailand has created a “unique retreat” for the family and their loved ones with Wheelchair Disability

It’s an amazing story of success, by a Corporate Geniuss with Political clout to reclaim laws of statute, an endless army of workers that overcame all obstacles.... well that's should describe this Corporate Genius fortheir result but in fact it was an Australian couple, Kevin and Mioara Durea, they came, they saw, they conquered! Cool .. I like that ….

They believed in their dream and fuelled with Passion, Persistence and Heart felt good intent it has come to be.


The Background
About 7 years ago Kevin’s accident rendered him wheeler chair bound. Life took a severe change; not only for the victim, it affects all loved ones….

About 3 years ago, during a visit to the enchanting wonder land of “Chiang Mai” Kevin and Mioara (Mia) had a vision; the people, the place the kinship that is special in Thailand, this must be the place….

“It’s the Vibe love” …..(that’s me thinking how they must have felt)..

sorry back to Chiang Mai .. A “retreat”, where people with wheel chair disability can be accommodated AND be with their carers, where they can relax and be cared for …… wow …. some might say not a “vision” but to do this as a foreigner in Thailand is “Mission Impossible”.

The present
On 14/05/2009 marked the official opening of The Durea Health Centre.

Construction began about 16 months ago, as expected "TIT" (this is thailand) the project ran a little over the deadline (quite frankly given the UNIQUE nature of the work 4months over is a flash), it needs to be said that this "one of a kind" project required a few miracles

Miracle 1
Approval from B.O.I. (Thailand Board of Investment) for an Australian Owned company to develop and open an exclusive Retreat.

Miracle 2
The Builder Khun Boonchid Tantayanuson, his heart and soul went into the project and the Durea's "thank him endlessly". "It was always a business risk; specialist works, a foreign country, anything could go wrong, and it did but that’s life, we never lost sight of our dream and nor did the people around us, include Khun Boonchid".

Miracle 3.. Our trees and plants
During the construction we lived a few kms away and “put in a 2 bobs worth” .. This includes personnally planting about 6,000 trees and shrubs.. and I mean “we”, the thais were amazed to see our work ethic. when your on a mission it must be done.

Miracle 4.
Thai people. … words can’t explain this

The Retreat comprises 12 rooms, catering for up to 40 people. ..
During our interview Mia pleaded not to be named, in preference for attention to her gallant Husband, their staff, the builder, Thailand. Mia was insistent the Retreat is about “a retreat” don’t think about Shopping or touring, well that’s up to you, we know people need a place to relax, for everyone, including the carers. It’s internal satisfaction to know your loved one has comfort; our retreat has no stairs, everything is accessible; the pool, sauna and alternative health care is provided by wonderful staff of 12.

On arrival at the Chiang Mai International airport we provide free transfer along the bypass to our Retreat, about 14 kms from Muang (the township).

The alternative health care includes massage, facial, and that’s for everyone.

….It’s a little harsh to refer to the “staff” as staff, more family, as only Thai can do. Prettywell everyone that started with us 3 years ago are with us today.

We built a special place, not because we are business people but because we had a life changing experience and realised what’s really important and now we love to help care for others and their carers.

Mia is back to Perth WA (West Australia) everyone few months to continue her vocation as a Nurse, staying just long enough (a few months) to return to collect Kevin and continue their travels…

if you visit the retreat and their away on travel don’t worry, the full time manager and staff of 12, oops family of 12 will care for you with heart felt kindness.

"The Thailand Bar Mat" has been moved to protect Phuket

The Word on the streets

The Infamous Bar Mat, the victim of an international incident in Phuket earlier this year, has been relocated.

Owner of The Downunder Bar Bangkok (Rob) claims to have in his possession the very same Bar Mat that was the connection to an Australian Women creating International headlines when something when wrong. The bit that went wrong is a bit like the "Titanic", it should never have happened and at each point where there was a opportunity to step down they ignored the obvious and the worse it got.

The truth is this



1. This is Liarland, so we don't know if Rob is fair dincum or not. If you wanna know why it's Liarland ask Rob, having lived and worked his Bar for (i think it's 150 years) he has a lot of tales to tell.


The real reason is is known as Liarland is the unrelenting genuine desire to avoid conflict, Thais will by nature of not wanting to offend say something that is not correct, it's very sweet and innocent but more often than not becomes the catalyst for distrust as it breaches codes of Western Culture... more on this later

2. The Mat is Bloody enormous, pictured right Rob Demonstrating how enormously difficult it is to conceal the Mat in a Bag, and after 3 people assisted in rolling it up. that is, 2 people had to shift from their chairs, to make room to work the mat and another to hold the mat.. It is fact, you need a really really big Bag.

By the time we finished the demonstration it became the cause of disturbance to the patrons; gathered at the Bar watching Aussies rules football.

Fortunately the half time siren was heard and then tones of annoyance switched to one of curiosity, a brief explanation of our activity and interest was ignited. Having actioned the logistics (the alleged concealment) we moved on to cultural questions with a volley of theories about the truth of the incident (it's Liar land)

It was in arguably agreed

If you are questioned by a Police person be they undercover or in Uniform you should not

a. Do NOT use Verbally abuse Thai, and definitely
b. Do NOT physically abuse Thai (ie., slapping), and it's not good conduct
c. run away, especially if you get caught and then refuse arrest, and if this hapens try to remember
d. Do NOT verbally abuse the Thai police person again, and if your are escorted to the police station definitely
e. Do NOT Abuse the Thai Police Chief

Actually ... it's not a good idea to do this an any Country!

Thai's a very easy going people and, they are extremely tolerant of ignorance of their culture by foreigners in part because of the gentle nature of their beliefs (Buddhism) they forgive and don't show aggression. This will however change if you cause them to "lose face" that is cause them a great deal of embarrassment.


The common words "mai Ben rai" pretty well sum up the nature of the people and the way in which they look and the softness of all issues.

Those lucky to get an invitation, actually the lucky ones were the few hundred extras that turned up hoping to "sneak in". I think everyone was made welcome and smiling to join the celebrations, everyone agreed, the Grand opening was ............

Mee Sa Nook Tii Soot .. translated means

"The best enjoyment"

Opening Night offered invitees a taste of the Food, Booze and Music from 6pm until 9pm, at which point the crowd had settled in and showed no resistance to working the purse to keep the wellness flowing.
