Thailand is the undisputed heavyweight of the industry, drawing over 1.2 million medical tourists.  Thailand’s two largest medical tourism targets are the Bumrungrad and Bangkok Hospitals, which annually treat 400,000 and 150,000 foreign patients, respectively.

The prices for elective surgery can be a fraction of what they would be in the west, with the quality level being consistently high. While common procedures such as face lifts, tummy tucks and breast augmentation are widely available, Thailand is also a world specialist in sex reassignment surgery. Procedures of this nature include almost everything .. I’d tell you more but then you’ll know what I did last summer !.

Thailand is known for its masterful dentists. Medical Radiation and Today’s Breast Cancer Epidemic

Breast cancer incidence has sharply increased since the year 1960. This correlates with an exponential increase in the use of medical X-rays.

The most recently released data indicate that as many as 2,000 excess cases of breast cancer will develop as a result of CT scans performed in the year 2007 alone!38

Dr. John Gofman, however, knew this nearly 40 years earlier. In 1970, Gofman and his colleague Arthur Tamplin wrote to The Lancet39 expressing their concern that the amount of radiation needed to double the risk of breast cancer was very low. Young women were especially vulnerable, he said, and the greater the radiation exposure, the greater the risk. The evidence was there that radiation exposure could significantly increase the risk of breast cancer, but few were following up on this critical research.

In a lecture given at a meeting held by the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1994, Dr. Gofman presented his findings showing that there was increased breast cancer in Japanese women who survived the US atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.40-42 Studies on mice and guinea pigs showed that cancer-resistant animals developed breast cancer if given repeated doses of radiation.43 But the most damning research about breast cancer and radiation was preliminary data from young women who had undergone repeated fluoroscopies as part of their tuberculosis treatment from 1930-1950. These women were developing breast cancer at more than double the expected rate.44-48

Hospitals around the world are drawing new patients with top-notch doctors, high-tech equipment and low costs. These 10 are leaders in their field.

It’s not a stretch to call Jamie Johnson an accidental tourist in Thailand. While touring with a Christian singing group, Johnson, a diabetic from the United States, developed an infection in her ankle that shut down her kidneys. She was evacuated by airplane from Malaysia to Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok – a facility she had never heard of in a country she had never been to and in a city she had associated with a sex shows in beer bars. “My husband back home was thinking, ‘She’s going to be in a straw hut’,” she says.

Johnson, though, was lucky enough to land in Asia’s first internationally accredited hospital and one of the most modern and efficient medical facilities in the world. Last year the hospital treated 400,000 foreign patients – the highest of any hospital in the world – from more than 150 countries, for everything from heart disease to hip replacements to breast implants. The attraction: world-class medicine at developing-world prices. And patients get velvet-glove treatment redolent of a five-star hotel. “We deliver the one thing that people want in health care but don’t expect to get – service,” says Ruben Toral, the hospitals marketing director.

As medical costs skyrocket – Americans spent 16 percent of GDP on health care last year, according to the OECD, and Europeans aren’t far behind – the idea of going abroad to get healthy is becoming more and more attractive. More than 150,000 North Americans and Europeans currently seek medical treatment overseas each year, estimates Josef Woodman, author of the forthcoming “Patients without Borders.” For invasive surgeries, preferred destinations include India, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. Large hospitals, such as Bumrungrad and the Apollo chain in India, actively court American, European and Middle Eastern patients.

Slick web sites tout their partnerships with nearby luxury hotels for post-op recovery. Bumrungrad arranges limousines to pick up patients at the airport, and sheiks and princes congregate in the Platinum Lounge of Apollo’s Delhi hospital. Abacas International, a leading travel facilitator, reports that medical tourism to Asia could generate up to $4.4 billion by 2012.

Businesses are taking notice. At least 40 corporations have signed on to the overseas plan that United Group Programs, a health insurer in Boca Raton, Florida, began offering over six months ago. Sending an employee abroad can save 80 percent of the costs of a procedure; a $50,000 angioplasty in the United States costs less than $6000 in Mohali, India according to GlobalChoice Healthcare, a firm that arranges foreign medical procedures.

Bumrungrad officials insist that foreigners come not just for the cheap bills and luxury accommodations. The hospital’s doctors, they say, have been trained at the best Western medical schools and use the most advanced medical equipment. And the service is eye-opening for patients accustomed to public clinics. Walk-in patients see a specialist in 17 minutes on average. Since 75 percent of hospital revenues are paid by patients directly, health and insurance companies have no say in treatment. Low labour costs allow Thai hospitals to employ more staff.

Most visitors (patients) become addicted (to the care) and find themselves going back for more (rather than suffer in silence).

I admit, I’m addicted so I keep going back. As I had nothing wrong with I find the resolution Dr. Golf.

Now I’ve had my “hit” I’m smiling and keen to share the wellness. I recently visited Bumrungrad International seeking an audience with Dr. Golf aka Dr. Dr Nanthadej

In fine Thai style I was greeted by Khun Palmy, Public Relations Coordinator. By chance we also meet with Khun Siti Survo, Expat Marketing Executive for brief chat about the recent Expat expo at the Hospital. Details of that event are covered in another media article at this link.

Khun Palmy kindly provided a brief tour of the hospital (5 star hotel). The more we toured the more I was questioning the theme of a Hospital. There is a soft harmony about the place, it has that “vibe” thing we talk about when we become attracted to the place and feel at ease.

They, the genius behind the scenes have created a culture that is very special, the U.S. Management team have infused their intel with the smiles of Thai to create a truly remarkable environment.

Our tour lasted for about 30 mins ( I could have just sat down somewhere and enjoyed the passing smiles for the afternoon) we made our way to orthopaedic section, it’s Dr. Golf’s other home.

I should add that I (like most people) don’t like hospitals as a rule, but Bumrungrad is a worthy exception.

Dr. Nanthadej (Dr. Golf) was quick to receive me in the waiting room, drats I was just starting to enjoy the surrounds. Khun Palmy escorted me to the Dr. Examination room where I was welcomed by the man and rebuilds broken golfers.

Dr. Nanthadej is well versed at his trade, that was clear, but more he as a passion about his art of wellness and a keen golfer as well so he has prospective.

We shared our common knowledge aspects of golf which lead us to and more intricate elements of golf motor mechanics and what causes those nagging injuries and worse how simple they are to treat but can’t because we don’t have his knowledge “everything is easy once you know how”

I learnt so much in such a short conversation. I could see Dr. Nanthadej was enjoying my attention but the increasing frequency of visitors meant I was running out of time. Khun Palmy showed remarkable patience, I dare say it’s not much fun watching 2 guys gorge themselves on golf swing and muscle ache revelations, nonetheless she was not letting the team down.

Did I mention Dr. N is a keen golfer (keep that in mind if you find yourself in a round of golf, his knowledge of your ailments might be the source of mind games).

We synchronised watches and rationialised we have limited time for an inspection of the golf clinic so I should come back another day. I agreed but noted I’m out of days so t must be next month and then it was decided no it shall be now!

Dr. Golf co ordinated instructions to Khun Palmy and I was led to the elevator while Dr. G delivered instructions to about 10 support staff that were queued and waiting. A few moments later we were across the driveway an entering an auxlliary building. The building is infact the residence facilities for patients (5 start private hotel) , what a great place to house a golf clinic.

The customary Wai received by fine tailored wait staff to the private apartments and through a side door on the ground floor and you enter something that looks like a fitness club.

The unique golfing clinic is well established and very very well appointed. It’s probably just as well the golf clinic is not in the hospital because when you go there it’s hard to get past all the care and smiles. The worst part must be the outpatient section because they know they are suppose to leave, I dare say many contemplate a slip and fall, not to sue but for the addiction of smiles and care.

Now back at the Golf Clinic, as I wondered I was mystified by the various mechanic contraptions. They were neither nor old and dated, more like something from NASA.

The Doctor kindly explained their application and invited me to test (I did ok on the reflex and balance thingo), I really have forgotten the tech terms.

I concluded the array of fancy devices and contraptions would be common place in the worlds leading sporting corporations to ensure the million dollar athletes are fully functional.

Living in Bangkok - get it in 1 day!

Every year Bumrungrad and ThaiCraft collaborate to serve the expatriate community with this annual event. Each year it gets bigger and better and this years was no exception with many exhibitors being added.

2009-09-12 recorded the 11th annual “Living in Bangkok” event at Bumrungrad International.

The organising committee must be thrilled with the results. More than 4000 attended the exhibition.
