Thammasat is the gateway for Education Australian

Australian and Thai universities collaborate together across a wide range of research and teaching areas that involve over 40 Memorandums of Understanding; Thai and Australian education departments share information regarding policy and education system developments; economic trade between Thailand and Australia has increased nearly 300 percent since their Free Trade Agreement came into effect; and Thailand hosts approximately 700,000 Australian tourists each year.

Clearly, Thailand and Australia’s relationship is strong, multifaceted and offers many benefits for both countries. ThammasatUniversity (Rangsit,PathumthaniProvince) understands the potential role of universities in fostering this relationship and, hence, was keen to host the Australian Studies Centre of Thailand at their Rangsit campus.

The Commission o­n Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Thailand, which also provides supporting funds for the Australia Studies Centre’s operations, recently selected ThammasatUniversity as the Centre’s host university.

The Centre is part of a wider strategy of the Commission o­n Higher Education to develop and support a range of area studies centres within the university sector to encourage a better understanding of Thailand’s international partners amongst the general Thai society.

For example, the Commission aims for the Australian Studies Centre to promote and support the teaching and research about Australia in Thailand, and also to provide a range of information services o­n Australia for the Thai community more generally.

Associate Professor Chulacheeb Chinwanno, Vice Rector for International Affairs at ThammasatUniversity, said the Centre will act as a contact and information resource for the Thai people, and also bring together Thais and Australians people with common interests and concerns.

‘The Australian Studies Centre is essentially about helping Thai people understand Australia better, so that when they conduct business or other interactions with Australians, they have an insight into their background, lifestyle and the way that Australians are likely to think,’ Dr Chulacheeb said.

Based at ThammasatUniversity, the Australian Studies Centre will conduct its activities through a network of university partners from all over Thailand, acknowledging Thailand’s relationship with Australia as a national initiative.

Mr Mike Courtnall, President of the Australia-Thailand Institute in Canberra, Australia, which supports institutional and people-to-people interactions between Australians and Thais, recently visited Bangkok to meet with executive staff at ThammasatUniversity and to learn more of their plans for the Centre.

Some of these planned activities include: a web-based knowledge database for Thais seeking further information o­n Australia; the writing of Thai language text books and teaching resources o­n Australia: the establishment of a network between Thai and Australian researchers; and a number of public seminars and workshops o­n issues where Thais and Australians may learn from each other’s experience.

The Centre will be led by Dr Suphat Supachalasai who will be Centre Director and who is an AustralianNationalUniversity alumni specialising in international trade.

His Excellency, Mr. Paul Grigson, Australian Ambassador to Thailand said the Centre and its university partners can play an important strategic role in further enhancing the harmonious political, economic and social relationship of Thailand and Australia.

Neil first visited Thailand in 1997, as University student at UCL in London. He, like most people I meet, instantly fell in love with “the land of smiles”.

He, with his family have returned to THAILAND some fourteen times and regard Thailand as our second home.

In 2002, he received an opportunity to help in setting up a bi-lingual programme at the Daruna Ratchaburi School, 2 hours south of Bangkok.

The project involved residing in Thailand for one and a half years (my wife is a qualified language teacher and also a swimming instructor).

“The experience there with the local Thai population and richness of the culture made us fall in love with the nation”. “We lived with a beautiful Thai family who would teach us Thai in the evenings and I would help them with their English.

By the time we left, the mother of the family had qualified to become an English teacher for High School and Junior School levels and is still doing it now. Leaving was really hard.

In 1999 Neil and family relocated to Australia as Director of Studies at another international school and the bonus was to have many Thai students and practice my Thai after school (it’s still not good but it was great fun to practice!).

Australia’s inbound tourism market is international education

Since 2000, 46 percent of the total growth of Australia’s inbound tourism market has been derived from international education visitors.

Over the same period, international holiday makers have delivered just 14 percent of the total growth.

Often scorned for having limited practical experience and business savvy, it is the academics that are exceling in today’s extremely challenging business environment and are continuing to attract strong visitation to Australia.

Tourism industry identity and convenor of the Tourism Futures conference, Mr. Tony Charters is highlighting the success of the education sector in the lead up to the prestigious national conference sponsored by Tourism Queensland and Tourism Australia.

“Academics are easily stereotyped as being cosseted away from the cut and thrust of the business world, but when everyone else is reeling, it is the education sector providing a guiding light for the tourism industry,” said Mr. Charters.

“Tourism Futures is renowned for taking a forward looking agenda - casting an eye into the next decade - and while the industry and policy makers at all levels of government have some critical tactics to decide upon, it is refreshing to see one sector getting very impressive results.”

“They obviously have very effective marketing strategies with good networks and communications channels,” said Mr. Charters. “We should be prepared to closely examine their methods and strategies to look for a way forward for the broader industry.”

While education tourism represents just 6 percent of the incoming international tourism numbers it delivers 22 percent of the total revenue from inbound tourism. Key countries responsible for this growth include India and China. Those nations, together with many south-east Asian countries, greatly value and invest heavily in western education for their children.

“Not only do academic institutions attract the students for their studies, but the students will almost always do some form of travel while they are here, as well as often attracting their families for visits and holidays. “Once links are established with our country, there will be a natural affinity between the students and Australia that will stimulate visits again in the future. So there is an ongoing return from the success of the educational institutions,” said Mr. Charters.
