I would recommend spending at least an hour visiting the temple.

Although it’s known as the Temple of the Dawn,

it's absolutely stunning at sunset, particularly when lit up at night.+

Given the beauty of the architecture and the fine craftsmanship,

it’s not surprising that Wat Arun is considered by many as one of the most beautiful

temples in Thailand. The prang (spire) by the Chao Phraya is one of Bangkok's

world-famous landmarks. The imposing spire rises over 70 metres high,

beautifully decorated with tiny pieces of coloured glass and Chinese porcelain

placed delicately into intricate patterns.

Head into the ordination hall and you can admire a golden Buddha image and the detailed murals that decorate the walls. Although Wat Arun is very popular for tourists, it’s also an important place of worship for Buddhists. Make sure you dress appropriately or pick up one of the cover-ups that are available for rent near the entrance.

Wat Arun was envisioned by King Taksin in 1768. It’s believed that after fighting his way

out of Ayutthaya, which was taken over by a Burmese army at the time, he arrived at

this temple just as dawn was breaking. He later had the temple renovated and renamed

it Wat Chaeng, the Temple of the Dawn. It used to be the home of the Emerald Buddha

before the capital and Palace was moved to the other side of the river. This can now

be seen at the Grand Palace.

The central prang was extended during the reign of Rama III (between 1824 and 1851)

and is now one of the most visited sites in Thailand. It was also Rama III who added the

decoration of the spires with porcelain so that they glimmer in the sunshine.

which is well known to tourists. It might be a boutique hotel, but half of this four-story

renovated shop-house is dedicated to dining in full view of the riverside’s star attraction,

Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn). Pull up a seat on the outdoor terrace to feast on a menu

that goes down two routes: one, elegantly plated Thai classics and regional specialties;

the other, Western bistro food. For us though, the highlight is its rooftop bar—the perfect

place for sipping a great selection of cocktails.

We were dressed casual and threw ourselves into the mix, well actually they were auto drive and I was quickly consumed by the Thai social culture (a few drinks, food and music and away you go – the genuine smiles creates a happy fever and it’s so contagious).

In 2010 I visited again, this time in formal clobber after an AustCham members Sundowner. Our surviving group of 4 decided on a “roadie”, our Thai team delivered us here and we protested that our formal attire was not in sync (cultural difference).. we had a great time absorbing the happy fever!

I’m reminded "T.I.T." (This is Thailand) as long you smile and show politeness your welcome from anywhere and dressed in anything!  (but be polite).

I'm back in 2015 and it's bigger and better, infact they just opened another branch with seats for 2,000 patrons .. what the !

Music

The backing band is large the range of music took us from 'sipping ripple wine down in the lightnin' bar' to a Thai country style tune. The various singers were all talented with good strong voices that suited the style of music they performed. The girls wore tiny skirts and showed enough bare waist and navel to be considered on the cutting edge of modern.

Patrons
Mainly conservative middle class audience fill the cavernous room, the younger guys had the right haircuts (look like Japanese cartoon characters) whereas the Thai folk and morlam singers looked either like poor or successful country bumpkins. Make no mistake: this was a good show. The delivery was akin to being in the ring with Mike Tyson in his prime, but without the risk of having your ear bitten off.


Entertainment
The audience was not allowed a moments rest and the amount of dunkels being downed did their bit to contribute to the party atmosphere. The Thais know how to enjoy their music, actually any music just the loud sound and seeing anyone smile is enough to get them jigging and it’s most contagious. The girls have an outstanding ability to be innocent yet so sassy in their dance moves, I'm not so sure if some parents would approve. Despite the slight disappointment in the not so authentic German taste of the viands and brew, I had a blast watching the people genuinely having inspired fun and could not help but laugh in wonder at the play list and the way it was put together. If you want to impress look no further for dinner and entertainment under one roof.

The centre room is bulked with Tables and the wing area is 2 storey all having good view onto the stage show which never ends. The night engulfs you and everyone us standing at their table jigging along to their favourite tune or they wonder to the narrow dance area in front the stage to dance more or offer rewards to the entertainers (free drinks).


Food may be an afterthought to the 40,000 liters of lager and other beers brewed here each month, but the kitchen turns out decent Thai food, with some German and Chinese fare thrown in for good measure.



The taproom (which is really why you should come) especially boisterous when the Band is performing its fusion of Thai and Western music. On nights that the band's not playing, local singers perform Thai and Western favorites. Established 1999, Tawandang is a large venue and you guessed it: is very popular with the locals due primarily to the right kind of entertainment. There are three types of beer brewed on the premises, Lager, Dunkel and Weizen. They are available in containers that range from 0.33L to 5L.

Please note that you really should, according to Thai Culture, have a Nickname!

Thais universally have one, or occasionally more, short nicknames (Thai: ชึ่อเล่น play-name) that they use with friends and family. Often first given by friends or an older family member, these nicknames are typically one syllable (or worn down from two syllables to one). Though they may be simply shortened versions of a full name, they quite frequently have no relation to the Thai’s full name and are often humorous and/or nonsense words. Traditionally call-names would be after things with low value, eg 'dirt', which was to convince bad spirits that the child was not worth their attention. Some common nicknames (the non-nonsense ones, anyway) would translate into English as fatty, pig, little one, frog, banana, green, or girl/boy.

Though rare, sometimes Thai children are given nicknames after the order they were born into the family (i.e. one, two, three, etc.). Nicknames are useful because official Thai names are often long, particularly among Thais of Chinese descent, whose lengthy names stem from an attempt to translate Chinese names into Thai equivalents, or among Thai with similarly lengthy Sanskrit derived names.

Thai Colours for each Day

Many people are curious about the wearing of certain colours in Thailand. Sometimes photographs coming from Thailand will show a mass of people wearing yellow, sometimes a river of pink and sometimes a sky blue.

It's as though the people all belonged to the same workplace and wore a uniform.  Often the photographs will show Thais dressed in a sea of one colour, lining the streets to pay homage to King Bhumibol, Queen Sirikit, or the now deceased but still revered King Chulalongkorn.

Sometimes they will wear the "royal" colours to make a point at a political demonstration.

Wearing a particular colour does mean something in Thailand. It is based on ancient beliefs and strict Buddhists will wear a certain colour each day – even if the colour is not obvious. More recently however, the coloured tee-shirts have been worn to display loyalty to the monarchy at a time when the political situation was in danger of disintegrating into chaos.

Colour for each Day

There is one colour for each day of the week and although conforming to this dress code is not essential, many Thais like to adhere to the system and will consider it when dressing.

Sometimes it may be just to make sure they don’t wear the wrong colour on that day.

On the King’s birthday, December 5th, most people will try and wear yellow during the day and of course, they will have the yellow flag flying wherever they can. Ditto for Queen Sirikit’s birthday on August 12th, when blue takes precedence.

Pink became popular when the king left hospital last year after his illness, looking frail in a bright pink blazer. Within hours, pink shirts were on sale across the country and were being worn in their thousands to show solidarity and to help the king's recovery. Wearing pink, the Thais said, would bring the king good fortune and good health.

The draping of coloured ribbons and lengths of gauzy fabrics around sacred trees, on special "lucky" sites, on the prows of boats, on spirit houses, chedis and anything else which may influence the gods, is another aspect of this adherence to the special colours.

The uniquely diverse scenery and activities available to the traveler who makes Thailand his destination has made it a favorite vacation spot for those who see a hidden treasure rather than a typical tourist trap. It is always important, however, to remember that international travel requires a passport. Australia's Passport system has improved 10 fold.. Tourism Bangkok more popular than ever

BANGKOK, May 2011  – Foreign tourists have more confidence in the Thai tourism despite domestic political situation, according to a recent survey conducted by the Department of Tourism under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. 

Tourism Department Director-General Supol Sripan said the survey of 1,200 foreign tourists was carried out during 9-30 April 2011, to collect their opinions for use in improving the Thai tourism sector.

According to the result, the majority or 84.7% of the respondents voiced no concerns over the situation in Thailand and its impact to the tourism sector. 77.5% said the Thai tourism offered a reasonable value. 71.4% confirmed that they would come back to Thailand.

Asked what had attracted them to Thailand, 36.3% of the respondents cited the sea while 59.3% said they were recommended by friends. 46.6% of the respondents were impressed by Thai delicacies. 45.6% were interested in Thai culture while 41.9% loved Thai spa and massage.

On problems to be addressed, 27.9% of the respondents wanted the authorities to solve overpriced private transport service while 25.6% wanted to see clean public places.

According to Director-General Supol, the tourism situation has been improving this year. The number of foreign tourists coming to Thailand by the end of this year is expect to be no less than 17 million, generating over 600 billion baht in revenue.

There is certainly no shortage of Smiling farang (Foreigners), just a few days ago the evidence was inarguably demonstrated with an overwhelming show of faces, local and abroad for the opening night of "The Clubhouse Bangkok"

Built on 11.6 acres next door to the Emporium shopping complex, it commemorates the 60th birthday of Queen Sirikit on August 12, 1992.

Often referred to as the "Queen's Park" since it was built to celebrate her 60th birthday. Construction began in 1990 on land which originally housed the Bangkok Meteorological Department until its relocation to Bang Na. Built around an ornamental lake, it contains 12 pieces of contemporary sculpture by Thai artists and is often used for open air events.
