Thai cooking is not a science it is an art. There is no “one way” to prepare a meal. Meaning personal preferences can be easily catered for. Thai cooking is also very forgiving, very sociable and enjoyable. When combined with the delicious flavors of the food, it is no surprise that cooking is a national past time!

Thai cooking is a fine mix of Indian, Chinese and indigenous influences. Over centuries it has evolved to become what it is today – a flavorful and healthy world-renowned cuisine. But what really makes Thai foods so unique and loved? Actually it isn’t one item, but rather a combination of may ingredients, each contributing to make Thai cooking so tasty. To start with, Thailand is a “Land of Plenty”, being blessed with a year round growing season. Soils are fertile and rain is sufficient thereby allowing for a wide range of cultivatable crops.

At the Bangkok Thai Cooking Academy you can acquire new skills and techniques to combine, coconut milk, peppers, spices and herbs, seasonings, sauces, and curry pastes with vegetables and meat or seafood to make delicious dishes. Classes are kept small and intimate to give maximum attention to students and lessons are given by K. Chayanut Boonmerod, who speaks Thai and English, and has several years experience at Wandee School - the leading Thai culinary college.

Every morning’s lesson starts with a shopping tour of the local Asoke produce and seafood market where students will learn how to select the best and freshest ingredients for their cooking. We can all take steps to reduce stressful emotions in the face of hardship by strengthening our resilience. Resilience refers to the capacity of an individual to cope with stress, overcome adversity or adapt positively to change.

Resilience is not a trait that people either have or do not have, rather it involves behaviours, thoughts and actions which can be learned and enhanced. By strengthening resilience you will be better able to persevere through any of life's challenges.

The American Psychological Association suggests “10 Ways to Build Resilience”:

1. Make and Maintain Connections - Maintaining good relationships with close family members, friends and people in the community are important. Reaching out to someone you trust can be comforting and supportive as this positive action allows you to talk through your feelings, thoughts and reactions.

2. Remember that Some Crises are Beyond Your Control - A person cannot change the fact that highly stressful events happen, but a person can change how they interpret and respond. Focusing your attention on what you do have control over promotes coping and resilience.

3. Accept that Change Is a Part of Life - You will be able to find ways to adapt to changing circumstances, e.g. establishing goals and taking decisive actions.

4. Move Toward Your Goals - Develop realistic goals and move toward these goals by asking yourself, “what’s one thing I know I can accomplish today that helps me move in the direction I want to go?”

5. Take Decisive Actions - Rather than detaching completely from problems, stresses and wishing the problem would go away, take action.

6. Look for Opportunities to Self Discovery -Try to understand your own experiences of dealing with loss, hardship or emotional problems. Look for opportunities of self discovery after adversity as people often learn something about themselves and find the experiences create opportunities for personal growth.

7. Develop a Positive View of Yourself - Look for and develop positive traits and view yourself positively to build your confidence in your strengths and abilities.

8. Keep Things in Perspective - Try to consider these stressful circumstances in a broader context and keep a long-term perspective. You have tackled past affliction that may have felt overwhelming at the time. Tap into those successful skills to get through current challenges.

9. Maintain an Optimistic Outlook - Having an optimistic and hopeful outlook enables you to expect that good things will happen.

10. Take care of yourself - Engage in healthy behaviours like eating well, regular exercise, plenty of rest and relaxing activities. Boosting your physical well-being is also good for your emotional health and can enhance your ability to cope.

Aussie dollar aims for the sky 'could hit $US1.70'

THE Australian dollar is likely to build on its standing as one of the best performing currencies in the world, despite last week's decline from a record $US1.10 level on concerns of a pending commodities rout.

The rampaging dollar 'could hit $US1.70' as budget and industries threatened

ANZ chief Mike Smith said yesterday that the currency was likely to resume its climb above $US1.10, and one of the world's leading foreign exchange experts predicted the dollar would continue to rise and could hit $US1.30 in 2013 and $US1.70 by 2014.

This spells bad news for non-resource sectors such as manufacturing and tourism and poses a dilemma for the government as it strives to achieve a budget surplus by 2012-13.

"I can't see that there is anything to knock it off its perch because it's not only the strong Australian dollar, it's also the weak US dollar," Mr Smith said yesterday. "And when you think about what is happening in the US, I can't see them increasing rates for at least 18 months and that will have an impact."

Global currency expert Savvas Savouri, of the British-based Toscafund hedge fund, went a step further, predicting the greenback would be relegated to a "museum", as China reluctantly moved to upwardly revalue its own currency, the yuan.

Combined with ongoing commodities demand and Australia's relatively high interest rate settings, this meant the dollar "promises to enjoy one of the most impressive bouts of appreciation of any currency within the G20 (industrial nations) and indeed beyond".

Dr Savouri, in Sydney for a conference, predicts the dollar will reach $US1.30 by 2013 -- and $US1.70 by 2014, as the greenback relinquishes its "exorbitant privilege" as the world's default currency. "The simple fact is the appreciation of the Australian dollar will be extraordinary," Dr Savouri told The Australian yesterday.

"There can't be a crisis in commodities as long as economies such as China and India are gorging on them.
"The idea that Goldman Sachs or other speculators are hoarding commodities is absurd. If you are building hospitals and highways, you need all of these riches from out of the ground."

On the flip side, Dr Savouri expects ongoing pressure on the greenback, which enjoys "exorbitant privilege" as the currency of choice for traded currencies. He said China inevitably would move to revalue its currency to tackle inflationary and speculative pressures, most notably in the Chinese property market as investors chased yuan-linked assets.
But he believes China will engineer a "soft" yuan adjustment, by which the currency remains weaker (or at least stable) against European currencies.
Having built a huge surplus of US dollar foreign reserves "to the frustration of Washington", China is likely to chase alternative currencies, including sterling and the Australian dollar.

"The yuan's period of being coupled to the US dollar will soon have to end," he said. "It will do so because Beijing deems it time to do so, not because Washington forces the matter."

Dr Savouri is unconcerned about the problems flowing from Australia's "two-speed economy".
On Friday, the dollar touched a low of $US1.05 before recovering to close just under $US1.07.

Tourism Bangkok more popular than ever

BANGKOK, May 2011 – Foreign tourists have more confidence in the Thai tourism despite domestic political situation, according to a recent survey conducted by the Department of Tourism under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

Tourism Department Director-General Supol Sripan said the survey of 1,200 foreign tourists was carried out during 9-30 April 2011, to collect their opinions for use in improving the Thai tourism sector.

According to the result, the majority or 84.7% of the respondents voiced no concerns over the situation in Thailand and its impact to the tourism sector. 77.5% said the Thai tourism offered a reasonable value. 71.4% confirmed that they would come back to Thailand.

Asked what had attracted them to Thailand, 36.3% of the respondents cited the sea while 59.3% said they were recommended by friends. 46.6% of the respondents were impressed by Thai delicacies. 45.6% were interested in Thai culture while 41.9% loved Thai spa and massage.

On problems to be addressed, 27.9% of the respondents wanted the authorities to solve overpriced private transport service while 25.6% wanted to see clean public places.

According to Director-General Supol, the tourism situation has been improving this year. The number of foreign tourists coming to Thailand by the end of this year is expect to be no less than 17 million, generating over 600 billion baht in revenue.

Here are my thoughts. However, if this grabs your interest lets benchmark

Social Trends - The workplace is continuously evolving. You may have seen for yourself a new, younger CEO allowing the pent up desire for changes in workplace culture to evolve where the older predecessor did not. In my view there is no doubt social media is a key element of the immediate future of our workplaces. The question is, what should it look like for your organisation?

Risks of allowing access - A few of the most obvious risks include impact on productivity and inappropriate workplace behaviour such as bullying and harassment and damage to corporate reputation. Other risks that may be present include IT security risks as social media sites are havens for the mischievous. Even so, most of these risks are manageable. Time wasting and inappropriate workplace behaviour can occur on Facebook using an employee's smart phone while sitting at their desk as easily as using the organisation provided desktop. IT security can be addressed at some expense. Perhaps it is better to bear some of these risks and actively manage them through access policies and training?

Risks of denying access - If you deny access you are stating that social media does not have a role in the workplace. While this might be true for some organisations where the distraction of social media can be a safety concern, there are many organisations, from leading technology companies to media to the police, using these tools right now. The risk is then two-fold. 1) You may be missing out on much needed talent as many of the younger generation may steer clear of you. 2) You may be missing out on the opportunity to manage parts of your business in a better way because you have not allowed your workforce to explore how social media tools can benefit the organisation.

Opportunities - Managed well, I suggest that even the most conservative organisation can benefit from social media access within the workplace. Social media can be used amongst the workforce to build and foster relationships, share knowledge and mould organisational culture. Twitter can be more effective than SMS for keeping staff and other stakeholders informed during rapidly evolving events. For SMS your staff and customers have to keep you updated regarding a change of number, with Twitter, anyone can follow you.

So, "lead" or "follow", either way I believe most businesses will need to be there sooner than many of us think.

Defining Hospitality Star ratings

Though many travelers rely heavily on star ratings when booking hotels, there is no international standard system, nor even clearly defined parameters. What constitutes a four-star hotel in one area may differ sharply from what is considered a four-star hotel in another area. European hotels generally rank from one to four stars, meaning that a four-star hotel in Thailand can differ greatly from a four star hotel inn Australia. Not just the quality control and features but also the attitude and aptitude of the staff and Management.

Lack of Unification
Some sites may rely on an amalgamation of several ratings systems, including their own. This means the site is even less likely to award properties ratings similar to that of other sites. Hotwire, for instance, culls its ratings from several major guides in addition to customer feedback and the experience of its own reviewers. Therefore, how Hotwire ranks a hotel may differ from the hotel's own rating.

International Data Roaming costs are sending you broke!

Image via WikipediaWe continue to hear stories of travellers with smartphones (particularly iPhone users) incurring huge data-roaming bills, particularly Telstra customers.

One (big) reason for this is the charging mechanism used by Telstra (Optus also has its problems). Telstra charges 1.5 cents per kilobyte, PLUS a 50c per-data-session flagfall. A data session is a connection from your handset.

There can be (and often are) many simultaneous data sessions running on an iPhone, for instance the default e-mail setting is to check e-mails every minute - that means that even if you don't send or receive e-mails but don't change the settings you will incur a charge of more than 50c each minute.

If you leave your phone on whilst roaming for a 16-hour day, that is more than $720 per day, just for (no) e-mail! It makes a mockery of the per-kilobyte charge, as the effective rate jumps up to perhaps as high as 2.5 or more cents per KB when the flagfall is included

People are constantly confused by the topic.. is it a call cost or a data pack cost?

You can actually use one for the other and vice versa - but be warned doing so will either save you a bucket of money or bury you in debt. BOI Fair 2011, which will be held from 10-25 November is the third time the Board of Investment has organized an industrial fair to showcase the accomplishments of Thai industry and the development of world-class industries in Thailand.

In 1995, as part of the celebrations of the Fiftieth Anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s accession to the throne, the Board of Investment organized BOI Fair ’95, and Their Majesties, King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit, graciously presided over the opening ceremony on 17 February 1995. Under the theme, ‘Thailand Moves Ahead,’ BOI Fair ‘95 showcased the country’s strong potential for future industrial development and the capabilities of Thai manufactured goods and services.

At the time, it was the biggest exhibition ever held in Thailand, covering 400 rai (160 acres) of space at Laem Chabang Port. Among the Fair’s many important activities was a CEO Forum – featuring high-level executives from major companies throughout the world – and the BOI Fair Film Festival, which featured films and filmmakers from around the world.

BOI Fair ‘95 was originally scheduled to be held from 17 through 26 February 1995, but was extended to 28 February to accommodate the larger-than-expected turnout of 1.8 million people.

Buoyed by the success of BOI Fair ‘95, in 2000, as part of the 6th cycle (72nd birthday) celebrations of His Majesty the King, the BOI organized a second BOI Fair, BOI Fair 2000, with the opening ceremony presided over by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

Among the goals of BOI Fair 2000, which was held at Muang Thong Thani in suburban Bangkok from 3-17 February 2000, was the restoration of confidence in the Thai economy among foreign and domestic investors in the aftermath of the 1997 Asian financial crisis.

Throughout the 15 days of the Fair, leading companies from all over the world showcased the capabilities of Thai industry, and provided an opportunity for small and medium-sized businesses to show their capabilities by exhibiting products.

To say BOI Fair 2000 was a success would be an understatement, as almost 4.5 million people flocked to the fair, which included 72 outdoor pavilions and more than 1,000 indoor booths.

As at BOI Fair ’95, there was a CEO Forum, presided over by Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai, which attracted high-level executives from major multinationals, including Minebea, BMW, Toyota, Nestle, Johnson Electric, and Proctor & Gamble, to name just a few.

The BOI also organized more than 175 seminars on a variety of topics of interest to both industry and consumers and the seminars proved extremely popular, attracting some 20,000 participants, more than double the original estimate.

The Ministry of Labor organized a Job Fair, attended by more than 50,000 job hunters, about 40% of whom were able to secure jobs, primarily in factories on Thailand’s vibrant Eastern Seaboard. The Department of Vocational Education (DOVE) also exhibited at BOI Fair 2000, highlighting innovations from students at some 100 vocational schools nationwide.

There can be little doubt that BOI Fair 2000 was a success in every sense of the word, and with 84 pavilions (all of which have already been booked) and 3,300 booths, BOI Fair 2011 is sure to be even more successful than the previous two events.

Flights to Bangkok / How to Get There

Today, Bangkok is a major international hub for travelers to Southeast Asia, so flights are available from most major airports around the world.

There are quite a lot of options for getting around the city, but it may take new arrivals a little while to get accustomed to them, as they can be a little confusing. The fastest options are the elevated train system and the underground train system. These are both user friendly and free maps are available. Those that want to sightsee as they move around town will enjoy the water taxis, which are inexpensive and convenient. While at the check in counter I learned over something and gashed my leg.

I had no sensation of pain nor aware of the flood of "claret" streaming down my non sun bronzed Aussie leg. I was in "frantic" mode over lost travel docs while assessing the loss of excess luggage costs coupled with the anxiety attack of holding up the queue. The hot weather and stress was stimulating blood flow and wearing shorts made me a stage for crowd entertainment.

When I spun around and saw the angry mob I put on that look that says "it was not my fault". Satisfied I had bluffed them I bowed to lift my overweighted carry bag and there it was "vampires cocaine". A long line of new harvest Fresh claret down my leg! I looked up and confirm the mob looked pleased.

I wadded into the nearest corner, head bowed like a shamed student. I slumped over the problem and started burning. Each time I swabbed it dry then stood up to move it burst it's banks. I was stuck and running out of hankie

She spoke softly offering me a band aid and together we did a repair job (about 9 of them). I thanked her and got back on track, yet stopped about 29 paces on and decided she deserved more. I tracked her to where she was sitting and offered a formal "thank you" and a very sincere smile.

When I got upstairs I wondered why she had band aids and was sitting in a chair and not a queue? I never went back and these unanswered thoughts will haunt me.

On entering the VIP (Gold lounge) I was delighted to see “Roelene” behind the counter, she is a sprightly 74 year old Qantas lounge receptionist. For the last 12 months during my monthly voyages she has not been seen and I always enquire. She had been injured at home, then illnesses and lately she just happen to be working on days that I don't travel.

She had decided to retire. She said I was so lucky because today is her last shift and quite odd because she has not worked on a Sunday for 6 months. I only know her from her job, I enjoy her enthusiasm and firmness to her job description, it's a vibe thing.

At the call of "final boarding" I scrambled to the queue (another bloody queue) and bumped into an old friend. This unseen friend owes me a lot of money but lives in denial (and I don't mean a river).

Well hello Jarvi!

He motioned forward and back, we shook hands and exchanged a few pleasant words as we passed through ticketing. I was seated in Biz class and he in cattle (I guess his still can’t make money), anyway as I was paranoid about holding up queues I suggested he make for his seat (47) and I'd pop down later for a chat. Once I got settled I thought, nah lets enjoy the flight so I introduced myself to the guy next to me. Gary turned out to be good company a Scottish rigger living in Thailand working in Karratha (W.A.). We exchanged some tales then I fired up the laptop to clear some back office admin deciding on a movie.

Bad news

The 240v plug in my seat was not working, I'd used up my battery power in the Gold lounge for social but now I needed laptop fuel for work. bugga!

Good news

I know the TG staff are always overly keen to serve (I don't think Qantas staff will get that). The hostess immediately investigated and promptly returned with a special conversion plug that she retrieved from her personal travel bag. Wow – that’s service!

it’s disgracefully funny. Be warned – it promotes a strong “Meta” message about humanistic values. Only some of you will get it's important message, it's well disguised in the movie subliminally destined for the elite.

At the terminal entrance stood several well dressed T.E. (Thailand Elite) VIP member club staff displaying a large sign welcoming their “Members”. It was “Jarvi's" name up in lights”. What the!

Some years ago he paid around aud$50,000 for the life membership (I guess he used my money but he insist that’s not true, he used my money on other bad decisions). The member club was a good idea that went bad through corruption and/or selfish people.

Good news

I’m now digesting humour and living a smile:-

• Jarvi is renown for his quote “you idiot”, albeit in jest it can be belittling, lets try!

• He’s sat in cattle class and TE (Thailand Elite) staff will know so they are giggling.

• Their VIP service includes a kart ride to the VIP immigration desk (it’s 150 mtrs from today’s terminal).

• “Biz class” passengers now get access to the same VIP desk (but not kart), but wait there's more, we also get express luggage so I was out of the airport while he was fishing at the luggage carousel ( I was going wait but I'm not a slow buffalo - see below).
• I should have shouted “you idiot” but I remember “the rules for being human”.

Everybody makes mistakes, but how do we grow from that experience, some become leaders and others get in a rut. The difference between a rut and a grave is the depth!

A brief escalator (spoken as alligator if your Thai) ride to the taxi stand and your away.

Bad news
The taxi driver tried to seduce me into a freelance fee (ie., no meter), he hinted the large heavy suitcases were tough work loading into the car. I offered him 1million baht. He was a little peeved at my sarcasm but he quickly regained focus (budgets), a renewed smile and a variation on the sales pitch.

Before he could finish his pitch I offered 100baht more than I think he expected, he was stunned and gratified. Now I have an enthusiastic (well paid) audience for my comedy skit and bastard Thai language skills, so I began. He enjoyed the jokes so much, but I did not! I skipped to skit 2 - spoken Thai.

I explained the suitcases were loaded with clothes for slum kids Bangkok (Sister Joan). He rejoiced with “Khun jai dee maak maak” every minute or so of the 9 minute journey to my apartment (I use 9 coz it's good luck in Thailand). On arrival he did not want the agreed "fee" now asking for a lower value? (so now my money is no good - what the). I insisted he take the correct weight, an extra (100baht).

This morning
I received an email about a Biz deal that suddenly changed from loss to profit. of $10,000 .... now how did that happen over night. Was it Karma or good luck.

In keeping with Buddhism culture I will hand a taxable value over to Sister Joan's project.

I was a participant in a tour organised by “Aussie Exec Tours Bangkok”. The tour comprised Australian business executives (male and female) and commenced on the 28th of November, 2010 with a return-trip from Perth to Bangkok.

The concept of this tour revolved extensively around the objectives of team building, hospitality rejuvenation, business networking and cultural exchange.

I found this tour concept to be cutting-edge, where participants gained an immensely greater appreciation of interpersonal skills and group dynamics resulting from team building activities. This helped to build better rapport within the organisation.

I observed that not only did the executives find fresh perspectives about their colleagues, but they also rejuvenated their impression of the wholesome hospitality that is unique to Thailand and Thai culture. The tour host also offered introductions to trade links, thus creating a platform for import/export opportunities.

The integration of local Thai Personal Assistants (P.A.) into the team was a significant factor in localising the experience.

The P.A. helped immersed executives in the culture by providing local knowledge, translation and orientation services. All of us enjoyed a seamless cultural bond as the P.A. participated in all team events including team building activities.

Certainly for me, this served to enrich the unique experience of cultural exchange and extended friendships. I enjoyed my visit to Bangkok thoroughly because the P.A. made the tour seamless and memorable. I look forward to my next trip to Bangkok, hopefully with my group of International Marketing students.

On a related note, I was asked to attest the skills set of Arwee Manigluck, to assist with her Visa application to visit W.A. to help promote this unique concept. Apparently the visa officer claims her fluency in English Thai-English translation ability is doubtful.

To this end, I have no hesitation in providing both my assessment and recommendation of her competency and skills set. Arwee’s fluency in English is well above-average and more than sufficient to perform her role in Perth. In my seven-day executive tour of Thailand, I had no difficulty in conversing with her. She was very capable in communicating and interacting with all participants of the tour group.

In several circumstances, Arwee demonstrated significant maturity and problem-solving skills. This was most obvious during the occasional logistical hiccups, which would be expected of a pilot tour. These skills set enabled her to perform effectively in her role of Tour Manager, Translator, and Liaisons Officer.

New Super skywalk for Bangkok 2015

The pledge from Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to spend Bt15 billion on building the Super Skywalk System, a 50-kilometre clutter-free elevated walking space. Pedestrians will be able to enjoy greater convenience and safety.

This will offer a another value added attraction for Tourism making is more convenient for visitors to move efficiently through city zone. Pedestrians will not have to worry about sun or rain, as the skywalk will be covered and close-circuit television and adequate lighting will also ensure safety.

The first phase of the walkway would cover 16km and construction would begin next month at a budget of Bt5.2 billion. The walkway will go down Sukhumvit Road, starting at Soi Nana and ending at Soi Bearing. This phase will also include some parts of Phya Thai, Ramkhamhaeng and Wong Wien Yai.

The second phase will be 32km long and cover Ratchadamri, Silom, Sathorn, Phetchaburi, Ramkhamhaeng, Ekamai, Thonglor, Phaholyothin, Thon Buri and the Bang Wa areas.

Space for pedestrians is the only issue that has not been seriously addressed to meet the growing density of buildings in the past decade. "During the past10 years, walking areas have covered just a kilometre and half," Sukhumbhand said.

The Super Skywalk project is part of Sukhumbhand's "Krungthep Gao-na" campaign.

The walkway will be linked to the mass transit system, such as the BTS and the subway, Sukhumbhand hopes people would be encouraged to leave their cars at home. The construction is scheduled for completion in four years.

The BTS skytrain system is a significant attrtibute for Tourism Bangkok. "It's one of the very 1st aspects of our Induction for Tour guests, quotes Phill Smith of Exec Tours Bangkok". Suvarnabhumi Airport named fifth best and more

Image via WikipediaSuvarnabhumi Airport has been ranked fifth best in its category of annual capacity of more than 40 million passengers.

In the 2010 list, there were 13 airports rated in the category by Airports Council International (ACI). The top four are in Hong Kong, Beijing, Dubai and Dallas.

According to Airports of Thailand, which operates the Bangkok airport, in 2009, Suvarnabhumi was ranked sixth in the category of airports with capacity of 25 million to 40 million passengers.

In 2010, with the number of passengers reaching 42.7 million, it was moved up to the category of more than 40 million passengers. The ACI 2010 ranking covered 154 airports across the world. The ranking was based on a satisfaction survey of 260,000 passengers at those airports.

Suvarnabhumi Airport official Wilaiwan Nadwilai said: "AOT is committed to making Suvarnabhumi a top10 airport worldwide." The top three airports are now Incheon in South Korea, Changi in Singapore and Chek Lap Kok in Hong Kong.

BANGKOK, After long delays Suvarnabhumi Airport's Link began commercial services Monday (23rd August, 2010). The estimated cost of the project is 25.9 billion baht.

Official opening to the Pubblic was proclaimed on 4th January, 2011.

On its first day, a luggage check-in system at Makkasan city air terminal delivering luggage directly to the airport will be available for travelers. For those who seek to check in and transport their luggage to the airport can do so 3 to 13 hours prior to their boarding time.

About rail fares, express line users will be charged 150 baht for non-stop service from Makkasan terminal to the Airport and city line users will be charged between 15 and 45 baht based on distance. The services will be available from 6 AM to midnight everyday.

The service (Express) is very efficient, only last week we test the service to host a Tour group of Biz execs from Australia. From our Base in Bangkok it is a mere 10 minute Taxi ride to Makkasan, no queues, straight onto the BTS and 15 minutes later we were walking up the airport escalator to welcome our guests.

Flying high with Ladyboys

P.C. Air, which will fly to several Asian destinations starting in April, had its first training session this week for 30 recruits, including four from "the third sex."

Four Thai transsexuals -- known within the culture as "ladyboys" -- have been recruited as flight attendants for a start-up charter airline that says it will be Thailand’s first to include transsexuals among its cabin crew.

Thailand is known for its tolerance for transvestites and transsexuals, known locally as "katoeys" or "ladyboys." An annual transsexual beauty pageant is broadcast nationally, and Thai doctors’ well-honed skills at the surgeries needed to switch genders -- not to mention bargain prices -- have made Bangkok a sex-change capital.

But while katoeys are prominent in entertainment, frequently appearing on television series and in cabaret shows, other job opportunities are limited.

"I had applied to many airlines and was repeatedly turned down. They said because I was a transsexual, not a real woman," said Phuntakarn Sringern, 24, from Bangkok. "This is the first time somebody told me to come as I am and put on my best dress."

Company president Peter Chan, 47, who worked as a flight attendant for 10 years, said he doesn’t "see any reasons we cannot let ladyboys work as flight attendants" as long as his carrier complies with civil aviation laws.

"I think it’s time for the Thai society to be more open and support freedom of all sexes," he said.

The airline has separate orientation sessions for male and female recruits, and the transsexuals have been placed with the natural-born women. Chan said the transsexuals must live up to feminine standards.

"For ladyboys, we have to spend more than one day with them to make sure they can keep their feminine personalities. Their voices and their postures must be naturally feminine and they must be very patient," he said.

Becoming a flight attendant has long been the dream of Dissanai Chitpraphachin, 23, a native of Mahasarakam province in Thailand’s rural northeast and a former winner of the Miss Tiffany pageant for transsexuals.

"When I was young, I couldn’t take my eyes off those nicely dressed ladies in the airline commercials every time they came on the screen," Dissanai said. "I simply want everyone to open up their hearts and judge us by our work, not because of our sex."

New Google search feature updates with social network

Google, the internet gioant, launched a new feature that integrates social networking updates from sites like LinkedIn and Twitter into search results, showing users if a friend has tweeted or shared an article, video or piece of content.

Google's Media chief executive Jim Stewart says that is another reason why businesses need to be on social networks like Twitter, commenting on and sharing all types of content that can be spread through a fan base.

“About two years ago I said that Twitter was bigger than Google. And by that what I mean is that it has completely changed the way Google ranks search results,” Stewart says.

While Google has previously integrated results from social networks this new upgrade is much more – content your friends have retweeted or liked will now show up higher than it otherwise would have.

“This whole “real time marketing” aspect of everything is changing how Google works.

“Google was always lacking a type of integration with social media and this is the element that Twitter provides to them. This is just an exaggeration of that.”

In a new blog post Google outlined the way Google Social Search will work. Previously there would be a section of the results page dedicated to tweets but now they will be integrated throughout the results themselves.

“This means you’ll start seeing more from people like co-workers and friends, with annotations below the results they’ve shared or created,” Google says.

“So if you’re thinking about climbing Mt Kilimanjaro and your colleague Matt has written a blog post about his own experience then we’ll bump up that post with a note and a picture.”

In a second major update Google says links shared on Twitter will make their way onto the results page with a little note saying one of your friends has shared it before.

The third major update to Social Search is control over accounts. The new Social Search only works if you are logged into a Google account and you now have the option to connect an account or refuse content to be shared.

Google product management director of search Mike Cassidy has told TechCrunch that in some cases the search results may be changed depending on the content that shows up and one aspect to be considered is how many friends share a link.

As for Facebook, Cassidy said: “We’re focused on sites where it’s relatively easy to crawl for data … we’re interested in including any publicly available content.”

Twitter seems to be the main focus for now.

“One of the big arguments when Twitter first came out was that it would kill Google. But what Google has just done is combined them. It’s a good move,” Stewart says.

“This is simply another reason why businesses should be getting online as fast as they can and start sharing content with others.”

Thailand's deposed Prime Minister appears calm

Image via Wikipedia“My life is really relaxed,” he said Thursday. “I have lots of people coming to see me.” On Thursday, that included his Canadian lawyer, Bob Amsterdam, as well as a delegation from Thailand, which remains a country of deep political divisions heading into an election year.

Life in self-imposed exile is pleasantly laid back and far from lonely, says Thaksin Shinawatra, Thailand’s deposed prime minister, who remains a hero to many in that country’s “Red Shirt” movement.

The 61-year-old former leader has kept a low profile since being ousted in a military coup Sept. 19, 2006, but spoke to the Toronto Star in an exclusive interview from his Mideast exile.

It endured its worst violence in recent memory last spring when Thaksin’s red-shirted supporters poured into the streets of Bangkok to demand elections and protest the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and stayed there for almost two months.

Clashes with the Thai military left 91 dead and an estimated 1,800 wounded and led to eight months of emergency rule.

Image via WikipediaThaksin, meanwhile, has been living a peripatetic life since 2008, when he failed to return to Thailand from the Beijing Olympics, after a Thai court had convicted him on corruption charges and sentenced him in absentia to two years in jail.

Reports from Bangkok last week said a group of Pheu Thai party members were travelling to meet with Thaksin and discuss who should assume the opposition party’s leadership.

Thaksin, a former billionaire businessman, distanced himself Thursday from direct involvement in any political movement.

He insisted he is not advising members of the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD), the formal name for the Red Shirts, who enjoy wide support among Thailand’s rural poor and working class. “I don’t know them,” he said.

The British-born Abhisit promised a reconciliation process last May. “Reconciliation would mean that you have to talk,” Thaksin said. “And find a solution to bring democracy back. Reconciliation does not mean you get rid of leaders and bring their followers to jail.” The UDD, meanwhile, is putting the finishing touches on a complaint it plans to file this month with the International Criminal Court, urging that the Thai government be indicted for crimes against humanity in connection with last spring’s deadly demonstrations.

New Business registration in Thailand is rocketing

Image via WikipediaBANGKOK: -- New company registrations are expected to grow by more than 22 per cent this year on an influx of investment to Asia, especially to Asean, amid slow economic growth in the United States and the euro zone.

The Business Development Department yesterday reported that new registered companies grew sharply by 23 per cent from 2009 to 50,776 firms last year, the highest in 99 years. Combined investment capital rose 20 per cent to Bt263.82 billion.

The investment capital for existing firms also increased sharply last year, by 37 per cent to Bt603 billion, while the number of businesses shutting down operations dropped by 6 per cent to 16,004.

Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot attributed increasing new-business growth to strong economic fundamentals, despite Thailand facing three negative factors: a fragile global economy, political unrest, and natural disasters.

He said new company registrations should increase continuously this year on strong economic expansion. Investments from South Korea, Japan and China will benefit Thailand and other Asean countries, as the region has high potential to serve as a centre of manufacturing and trading.

Other factors that contributed to the growth of new businesses last year included recovering investment in the stock market, strong export growth, the government's investment under the Thai Khem Khaeng Project, and an increase in foreign direct investment.

However, six negative factors will affect new-business expansion this year, including a stronger baht, high interest rates, political uncertainty and the lead-up to the general election, the fragile global economy, higher inflation, and an increasing oil price.

Alongkorn said those factors would affect all business transactions, capital investment, and the establishment of new companies, as well as the collapse of others.

In December alone, new registered businesses rose 26 per cent to 3,112 companies with an initial investment worth Bt11.18 billion.

Most all techo travellers will want to take advantage of WiFi networks, to browse the Internet. Some of the WIFI-Free venues are associated with coffee shops and food outlets such as Starbucks or McDonalds, or sometimes airports or libraries.

So if you saw a WiFi network called "Free Public WiFi" when you were travelling, wouldn't you be tempted to connect and give it a try?

Warning, warning will Robinson - Warning Warning!

Don't. Despite its obvious enticing name, and it being available in many thousands of locations, it doesn't provide Internet access and may compromise your laptop's security.

It's due to a bug in Windows XP (fixed in SP3, but many users will not have installed that upgrade). When a non-upgraded computer can't find any of its "favourite" networks, it automatically creates an "ad-hoc" network (meaning one not connected to the Internet, just ready to connect to any other computer) with the same name as the last network it connected to.

Most of us can't resist lure of something free, so we connect (and the next time they turn on their laptop, it becomes the originator of the "Free Public WiFi").

As part of its Thai Spring Sale, return fares from Australia to Bangkok are reduced (valid for bookings by October 17 and travel until March 31, 2011). Bangkok is renowned for its main shopping malls down town (with Central World being the biggest shopping mall in South-east Asia), offering an astounding variety of international and local brands.

Towards the north of the city, and easily reached by skytrain or underground, is "Chatuchak Weekend Market" (also known as JJ markets). It's possibly largest outdoor market in the world, selling everything from household items to live, and sometimes endangered, animals. You need to some conditioning to tackle this venue.

The "Pratunam Market" downtown, is nearly totally specialised in fabrics and clothing. The night markets in the Silom area and on Khaosan Road are mainly tourist orientated, selling items such as T-shirts, handicrafts, counterfeit watches and sunglasses.

In the vicinity of Bangkok one can find several visually stunning floating markets such as the one in Damnoen Saduak. The "Sunday Evening Walking Street Market", held on Rachadamnoen road inside the old city, must be the shopping highlight of a visit to Chiang Mai up in northern Thailand. It attracts many locals as well as foreigners.

The "Night Bazaar" is Chiang Mai's more tourist orientated market, sprawling over several city blocks just east of the old city walls towards the river.

Thai Language "I botched it"

Image via WikipediaI just read a very funny article submitted in our forum about the humour and embarrassment between languages. So now its time for me to confess my stumbles in learning / speaking Thai

I was the driver for my three (3) Thai friends to visit an Asia supermarket in Perth. While pushing the shopping trolley I asked Khun Pair (thai student) “what’s the word for Trolley?"

Her answer (I've forgotten) was challenged by Khun Tong (ladyboy thai student). We resolved the definition with a ruling from khun Angella (thai visitor and adopted mum of the two students).

The conversation drifted to the appropriate word for “driver” (of a vehicle) being “cup" as opposed to "Kee" which is more appropriate when you put your leg over something, like a motor bike or an Elephant... ok but not ok...

As the 2 students dashed ahead Angella laughed to herself and then explained.. she told me the slang word “kee por” (meaning wife rides husband)!!!! ah haa funny guy me.. thinks I would test my skill on the unsuspecting students. But I mangled it…

I said PaW (raising) instead of Por (middle). One is father and the other is Husband

So when I thought I was being cheeky, talking stating "Wife riding husband" they were bemused by my sicko atttidue of "wife ride daddy".

Being polite they said nothing, they looked down with a sense of disgust and walk off?
It was apparent by their body language my humour was not right?

I did not understand ..... yet Angella was rolling in tears of laughter… how can there be 2 radical reactions ?

I stood puzzled by the diverse reaction and turned to Angella seeking guidance. Angella graciously explained my foible or rather fetish. She thought it was hilarious that I made such a mess of it. I immediately chased after the 2 Thai students trying to explain the intended joke ... eventually I managed to convince them I did not have such tendencies or perverted thoughts..

At the time it was most awkward but now we look back and laugh about it a lot. The more I quote this story the more confident I am about learning from mistakes...

Equally the opposite happened

Khun Pim was visiting from Thailand. There was a plumbing problem in the house and I mentioned I must attend when I get home from work. When I arrived Pim proudly bosted how she fixed the plumbing problem.

I looked quite surpirsed and having inspected the repairs I returned to the kitchen and praised her skill and said "how did you know how to do that"

Khun Pim looked me squarely in the eyes and produced a big beaming smile and an expression of great satisfaction and achievement, like someone was giving a speech for saving the world!

She boldly declared "I'm a pervert"!!

I recall coughing up my glass of water, whipped the spill from my face and said "your a what"?

again she said "Pervert", my expression had changed from humble to disbelief as I said "are you sure". By this stage Khun Pim realised something was wrong, her expression changed to a puzzled look but yet she continued to pursue the stance of a winner.

I explained what a "pervert" is and she was horrified.

We went back over the options and resolved that she wanted the word "Expert" and moved forward. It's now 2 years later and I use this example every few months, it always gets a laugh and opens up the channels for everyone to start trying speak another language without fear of too much embarrassment.

Benjarsiri Park, an oasis in a Concrete Jungle!

The Benjasiri Park is located on Sukhumvit road next to the Emporium Shopping Center and right by the Phrom Phong BTS station in the center of Bangkok.

Often referred to as the "Queen's Park" since it was built to celebrate her 60th birthday. Ghost Culture Bangkok

Ghosts and the supernatural is a deeply rooted belief in Thai culture, it’s origins are dated well before the introduction of Buddhism when in fact the religion, rather the beliefs were devotion of animism.

In order for the new and old to co exist there was a merger of the two beliefs and the elements of animism is evident in modern day Buddhism.

Animism (from Latin anima "soul, life") is a philosophical, spiritual idea that souls or spirits exist not only in humans but also in animals, plants, rocks, natural phenomena such as thunder, geographic features such as mountains or rivers, or other entities of the natural environment.

Image via WikipediaDifferent forms of worship and ceremony are significant to people in almost every part of the country. People of all ages and backgrounds, will on a daily basis visit a temple. In the backstreet of Bangkok to they pay their respect to the shrine of "Mae Nak," a famous female spirit believed to have died more than 200 years ago.

According to local tales, Mae Nak's husband was called off to war when Mae Nak was pregnant and a short time later she and her child died during childbirth.

Image via WikipediaHer husband came home not knowing of the deaths and was cast under a spell which made him live with Mae Nak's ghost and their child. A visitor said "The story of Mae Nak has been passed on from family for generations, so believed to be sacred. A lot of Thai people believe in her and pray to her to bring happiness to their family and that they don't fight."

In another corner of the Thai capital, a group of believers gather every weekend at the Power of Life Center to communicate with spirits. They sit together in a circle, chant, sing and meditate, in an attempt to reach out to the ghosts.

Sathittham Pensuk, director of Power of Life Center, said, "I think the reason Thai people believe in ghosts and spirits is partly because we study the rule of Karma and Samsara, or birth and rebirth. It's a Buddhist belief. Ghosts and spirits, therefore, are the end of life and the beginning of another life as the spirit."

Meanwhile, a new exhibition opening in Bangkok trying to explain the origin of the beliefs, and how Thais cope with and learn from ghosts.

It shows that even though Thai people's fear and beliefs have evolved with the changing surroundings and modern technology, in daily life, ghosts and different kinds of spirits are still prevalent.

Spirits, derived from , are still omnipresent. Spirit houses are erected on the compound of every building to serve as dwellings to house and befriend the spirits who inhabited the original spot, and every morning offerings – in the form of fruit, drinks and incense sticks – are brought to pay respect to them.

Google have published a starter kit for SEO. It's a beginners guide to the basics of Search Engine Optimization. The guide covers around a dozen common areas that webmasters might consider optimizing.

These include title and description meta tags, URL structure, site navigation, content creation, anchor text, and more. These area would apply to webmasters of all experience levels and sites of all sizes and types. แต่เมนูที่อร่อยที่สุดในงาน อืมมมม ชอบปลาราดซอสพริกค่ะ เผ็ดร้อนขอองจริง อร่อยมากๆ ท่ามกลางความหนาวเย็น ^_^ มีการแสดงรำไทยภาคต่างๆนบเวทีระหว่างที่ทุกคนพูดคุยและดื่มกัน อย่างไม่ลืมหูลืมตา แล้วมีรายการต่างๆขั้น ทั้งแจกรางวัล ร้องเพลง คาราโอเกะ โอ๊ยยยยยบรรยากาศอบอุ่นเป็นกันเองมากๆค่ะ

I went this party with Auswathai's family last night.There were many people from Thailand and Australia and other countries.We had Thai food and Thai perfomance. All is from volunteers (thanks). I had fun a lot especially when everyone was dancing, chatting, taking photo, sharing experiences, drinking and eating Thai food. I hope There will have this kind of event every year. I had lots of fun wearing Thai costume and dancing with rock and roll music!!!

Thank you all volunteers and supporters, without you there is no party ka.

Salute to the Majestic Malai a Skal Skipper

Tourism Thailand salutes Khun Malai

His Tourism journey spands more than 50 years.

Mr. Malai Sakolviphak started his career with Pan American World Airways on July 1, 1949. There were about 9 international airlines operating to/from Bangkok at that time. He worked through various departments, until the last position as Director for Thailand, Laos and Myanmar from 1982 to 1985.

When Pan Am sold its transpacific route, United Airlines offered him the position of General Manager from 1986 to 1992. After that, he joined the Pacific Leisure Group Head Office in Bangkok as Senior Executive Director from 1993 to 2009.

During the above periods, Mr. Malai joined several travel & tourism organizations, and was elected as member of the Executive Committee, such as:

- Airlines Club of Thailand (Past President and Honorary Life Member)

- Association of Thai Travel Agents (Executive Director for 1 year)

- Thailand PATA Chapter (Chairman of the Executive Board for 2 years)

- World Airlines Club Association (Past President and Member of Honour)

- For Skal activities:

Skal Club of Bangkok: From 1971, was elected President and Honorary Member.

Skal National Committee for Thailand: From 1980, appointed as International Councilor for Thailand, and elected as President on several occasions.

International Skal Council: From 1982 to 1984, served as Vice President of the Council, and was presented with Skal International Order of Merit. Skal Asian Area Committee: From 1992 to 1995, served as Director Communications & Public Relations.

He as presented the title of “Honorary Asian Area President” in 2006.

Skal International Functions: Coordinator for the 17th and 27th Asian Skal Assembly at Chiangmai and Phuket, Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the 57th Skal World Congress at Bangkok in 1996, and for the 67th Skal World Congress at Pattaya in 2006.

Mr. Malai has submitted his resignation from the Executive Committee of Skal Club of Bangkok and Skal National Committee for Thailand for health reasons.

Skal is the largest and oldest Association of Hospitality in the World.

Thailand Service Industry is Magical

HAVING recently return from my annual pilgrimage to Thailand, I am pleased to acknowledge the continuing congenial culture of the people from the "Land of a Smiles" scored with their excellent service, which was delivered straight from the heart.

Whether it was the masseuse at the dainty and unassuming foot-massage shop or the concierge where I stayed, their actions and mannerisms were consistent with, I believe, an intrinsic Thai cultural trait which causes them to exude both a natural and genuine humility, affable and warm hospitality which we in Australia can learn a lot from.

Compared to the our “Lucky Country”, I am sure Thailand has not had as many "courtesy" campaigns to inspire the population to achieve such high levels of service delivery. I think the Thai add Khun Kaa" sums it up.. see this link below. In Thailand, you will notice every encounter starts with "Sawasdee ka" (Hello) and ends with "Khob khun kha" (Thank you).

Case in point:

My friends and I were taking a stroll along Sukhumvit Soi 19 after dinner one evening when it began raining (nothing new really)..

The rain should be accepted as a clear sign that you should be in company of others and so we did. Instead of braving the elements and getting drenched we hopped into the nearest foot-massage shop.

After subjecting our feet to an hour of pleasure we made our way out the door, only to be confronted with a flood that had risen along the entire stretch. We tried to flag down a taxi, but to no avail and here is the wonder of Thai smile…

Noticing our plight, the masseuse approached us and asked us to wait under the shelter and she promptly took position in the flood waters and waded (more than ankle deep) to the middle of the street to wave down a taxi for us. She (Khun Anne) even made sure the driver reversed the vehicle as close to the curb as possible, so that we could enter it without getting wet.

We all share the view/comments that She didn't have to do this, but she did and without expecting anything in return. We were enthralled and impressed by her actions.

Shopping at Central Department Store was another happy experience. No matter how many shirts and paints the sales staff showed great enthusiasm, not just about a sale, but about having the satisfaction of a satisfied customer. It did not stop there, the experience was repeated with most everything we did, be shuffling many pairs of sunglasses to DVD and electronics, no one showed any grumble about the endless changes we made, they just kept smiling.

It was the same when shopping at Platinum and again the famous MBK. My group was a bunch of guys and girls that had all sorts of styles and tastes so and constantly overriding each other and insisting on another style so there was multiple changes before a sale. We were taking a long time deciding, which included calling and sending text messages to family members back home to check on sizes, before making a purchase.

The stall owners were patient and appreciative that we were a customer (of sorts) and served us more than required (or what I’m used to back home). I noticed that regardless of where we went, be it Siam Paragon, Emporium or the Chatuchak Weekend Market, the experience was the same.

It felt good that the polite treatment and courtesy we received was not the template stuff that big brands have been known to dish out. The cold, formulaic classroom inculcation of service-oriented values will never be as good as the warmth that emanates from one's innermost spirit.

How do we foster that attitude within our society? The current "Brand Thailand" effort which the Abhisit Government is embarking on can only be a positive push for the country as a whole.

With their native DNA already in place, everything else should be a breeze.
